Executive Board Meeting Number 00-10, 5 December 2000

Meeting was called to order at 1:30pm. Present: Graves, Fox, Apana, Bahler, Ballard, Barnes. Barge on Leave of Absence, Scafati excused due to prior commitment, and Singer absent.

Minutes of the last Board meeting read and approved. New members read and approved. Discussion of the membership status of Renata Guitart, who did play as a scab for the Atlanta Ballet.

VP Report: Fox reported that recording contracts are up around $910,000 so far this year. Ed Calle promoted the STAR campaign to Congress. There is possible litigation against JAM MIAMI.

Treasurer’s report: Local has 901 active members.  The Officer’s web page is now up, and 12 groups are listed on the referral web pages. Apana is researching life insurance costs and working on the 2000-2001 budget.  Suspension letters and delinquent dues notices have been mailed. His analysis of the trends of work dues since 1997-98 shows increasing amounts in the recording and symphonic fields, while casual and MPTF had declining amounts. Expense Reports were presented to the Board, and bad debt amounts were discussed.

President’s Report.  Language is being finalized for the new FPO CBA and the Local may file a grievance over the threatening phone calls made to players during the strike.  Graves met with Paul Lapinski of the PBO regarding scales for non-opera services performed by the Opera Orchestra and a settlement in the Vocal Competition grievance. Graves will meet with BPO management during the first week of January to deal with problems that have recently arisen. MCS still owes around $1000 to musicians and the Local; if payments are not made, the January concerts will be canceled.

Old Business: MSC to pass Bylaw amendments from November General Membership Meeting (lack of quorum). Discussion of  a Good and Welfare Fund;   MSC to propose Bylaw Amendment to create Fund. MSC to propose a $10.00 Annual Dues increase, with the extra money being used to bring in a union organizer to work on securing CBAs for the area orchestras and theaters.

Fox departed at 2:30. Ballard left at 2:45, at which point there was no more quorum and the meeting was adjourned.
