AFM Local 655 Election Committee Report

At the June 5, 2014 Executive Board meeting, the President, with the approval of the Board of Directors, appointed Scott Whitney, Lee Berger, Susan Dirgins-Friend and Martha Spangler to the 2014 Election Committee. On September 29, 2014, the President, with the approval of the Board of Directors, added Eduardo Martinez as a member of the Committee.

A post office box was rented June 30, 2014, at the Hillcrest post office, 4429 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, to receive nomination petitions, election ballots, and other committee-related correspondence.

In July 2014, the Election Committee designed and printed postcards with a notice of the nominations for union office for the 2015-2017 term. On August 7, 2014, 304 postcard notices were mailed to the membership with mailing labels and stamps provided by the Secretary-Treasurer. Nomination petitions were received as follows:

The Election Committee met Monday, October 6, 2014,  at the union office to prepare the ballots for mailing. The Secretary-Treasurer supplied mailing envelopes, return envelopes, ballot envelopes, and stamps. The Chairman supplied 332 printed ballots with the following slate of candidates:

The Election Committee prepared 289 ballots and they were mailed the afternoon of October 6th at the Hillcrest post office. The Chairman kept 43 ballots.

A total of 9 mailing envelopes were returned by the post office as undeliverable. All 9 were re-mailed with updated addresses. One mailing envelope (195) was returned a second time and a third mailing was made with a replacement ballot (R195) via certified mail.

 

The Election Committee met Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at the union office to tally the ballots. The Chairman reported that as of 5:00 p.m. on election day, November 17, 2014, a total of 143 return envelopes had been received and matched with the membership control list.

            One return envelope contained a ballot without a ballot envelope. Because secrecy was maintained, the ballot was counted.

One envelope (285) returned by a suspended member was not opened and was marked as totally void.

The Committee then opened the return envelopes and removed 141 ballot envelopes. The ballot envelopes were placed in a box and mixed at random to maintain secrecy. Ballot envelopes were then opened one at a time, and the votes tallied using the “call” method. The one ballot without a ballot envelope was inserted at random with the other ballots. The Election Committee certifies that the ballot tally was fairly and accurately conducted, the secrecy of the ballots was maintained, and that the election results were as indicated above.
