A thousand workers at a car battery plant in Kentucky have signed cards requesting to be represented by the United Auto Workers. The battery park is a joint venture between Ford and South Korea’s SK On, and workers have complained about exposure to chemicals, exposed wiring, and other hazards while they have been working at what is an active construction site.
Ten thousand nurses in Michigan are joining the Teamsters. Their campaign began a year ago and ended with a successful election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board. Nurses had been complaining about staff cuts, worsening benefits, and unsafe conditions after their hospitals had been acquired by Corewell Health.
The National Labor Relations Board has ordered Dallas Black Dance Theatre to pay $560,000 to ten fired dancers. The dancers, who are represented by the American Guild of Musical Artists, had been fired for allegedly violating company policies. The NLRB award includes back pay, front pay, and damages due to the loss of employment.
Disney has agreed to pay $233 million to settle a wage theft lawsuit with Disneyland workers. Disney had been charged with violating the Anaheim ballot proposition Measure L, which required companies that received tax rebates to pay workers at least $15 an hour. The settlement will provide back pay to those workers.
